Recheck of the eyes

Postby Melissa on Mon Feb 16, 2009 12:24 pm

I am so ticked off I could scream. I need to vent about medical stuff so here I am. I apoligise for any spelling errors..my eyes are still out of focus. lol

I have seen the same Dr. for two years in a particular practice that has several locations. That Dr. diagnosed my left and eventually my right eye zonules as deteriorating leading to lens dislocation. I have been on a yearly recheck going on my 3rd year. This year I made an appt with a different Dr. with the same practice different location closer to home because in Michigan we never know if we are going to get caught in a snow storm lately. lol

I left the appt today very confused and dumbfounded. The Dr. spent maybe 5-10 minutes with me...5 of those minutes was me asking him how he can come up with a different dx than Dr. C did for the past two years. This Dr. first came in and sat down and asked why I was there today. Personally...if a Dr. has to ask me what brought me I get worried. Maybe he could have asked me differently but I take it as he hasn't read the file.and folks. its not very thick. lol I explained to him my dx of Marfans and what the other Dr. in the practice found for the past two years and I was there to get a recheck and I added that he could read all of that in the file as he reads through it. He glanced quickly while the nurse turned the pages. I told him that I continue to have migraines and my vision is getting more blury but I was sure that was progression of age lol but I also have problems driving at night especially if the roads are wet because I have trouble focusing and shadows...I drive with my brights on all the time lol unless I am in the city. He quickly checked my eyes and he asked if I was followed by a Cardiologist...AGAIN...its in my file including my heart Dr. name to send copies to. I told him I was followed and my diameter.

He sat back and told me that he didn't see any deterioration of the zonules..in either eye. I asked him if it was something that could repair itself..he said no. I then asked how he could get a different dx than the other Dr. and he said that he can only tell me what he saw and that was that the tissue was intact and that he has seen people with Marfans so he knows what it should look like. He was abrupt and asked if I needed anything else...I told him I was really confused and not sure what was going on. He got up to leave and glanced at my son and asked if he was my child and asked if I was having him tracked...when I said yes he walked out. No nice to meet you.

We got in the car and I called the practice to speak with a patient relation person and I told her what I had just experienced and that I was confused and a bit upset. I wanted to speak with Dr. C and a 2nd opinion because their office lost credibility with me today...one of those Dr. has no clue what they are doing. She said she wouldd get my file and get it to Dr. C and someone would call me back.

I got to work and the Dr. I saw this morning calls and said he got the message that I called. WTH? I told him no..I wanted to speak with Dr. C to find out why his dx is different from his and that I was very confused by it all and not happy. He knew that when I walked out. He asked what was confusing? duh He asked if I had anything I wanted to ask him and I said you answered everything that you can..but that something about the visit bothered me and so I told him that I was disturbed about his demeanor with me and that I didn't feel he took much time with me or reading through my file (even just a few m inutes before seeing me would have been good.). He suddenly turned on me and told me I was rude to him in the office when I told him to "read my file" and he wouldn't let me answer to his accusation. He talked over me and didn't listen to anything I had to say and I found myself starting to shout just to be heard. I realized how close I was to losing my cool completely so I said "its obvious that you are not able to listen to my concerns..Goodby sir." and I hung up on him.

I called patient relations right back and she did intake and sent it to the Clinical Director. I just got off the phone with Bonnie and she apoligised profusely. I said not only do I feel like thier Dr.'s lack credibility now but after that phone conversation from Dr. M ..I now feel abused and battered. I told her I have been everywhere from John Hopkins to U of M and seen countless specialist regarding Marfans and my pregnancy with Marfans and I have never been treated in the manner I was treated today. I was talked down to and then accused of being the rude one when I had the nerve to confront the Dr. about his "bedside" manner. She said that he is normally very nice but then she also admitted that she has had complaints of a similar nature that I had and it was disturbing. She said that my insurance would not be billed and the money I paid upfront for copay and refraction would be held put towards a new appt. She encouraged me to see Dr. C who has been in practice longer and she knows for certain has treated people with Marfans. I go back in next week to see him. I told her I am a pretty patient person and often can let this roll off of me when I have a Dr. who doesn't seem competant but because his DX conflicted with a Dr. in his own practice it truly disturbed me and he didn't even try to put me at ease or say..let me confer with my partner..I am just not seeing the same thing but I need to look further into this. Bonnie agreed fully with me and she is referring the whole thing to the Executive Director of the Practice.

She made me feel a bit better and I had confidence with Dr. C before today so I am going to give him another try. He has always taken a lot more time with me and seemed to enjoy the questions I ask. lol Which is usually a lot. lol

So if you are still reading this vent..thank you. My vision is better so I can proof what I wrote.
I have just never been treated the way I did today and I needed to put it somewhere. lol

Yikes! Glad you got it resolved with the Executive Director and that the management was apologetic and willing to listen to your concerns. Since you get conflicting reports, have you considered a 3rd opinion as a tie breaker? Visit the best opth you can find in your area or even out of your area, and see what s/he says?

That reminds me when I was feeling sick, about to throw up and I was being offered pain medication from a nurse and she said, repeatedly, "You're being inappropriate!" Then again, I get treated like that all the time, though MUCH more often at school than at hospitals, and MUCH more often in elementary, junior high, and high school than in college (though it still happens a fair amount).

Sorry they're being so insensitive, instead of just looking for a miscommunication and trying to communicate in a way that meshes and is sensitive.
